Keeping yourself in tune is one of the most important and essential fundamentals in singing, maybe even more than your vocal range. Sometimes you will notice someone singing along with a CD and not even recognize that they are singing out of tune seeing that they are not recording what they sound like. Some people do not even see that they are singing out of tune even when they are singing without any music.
